"The History of Moldavite." https://moldavitegems.com/history.html. Updated October 2026. Moldavite's story spans deep geological time, the Stone Age, Enlightenment science, Bohemian jewelry and a 21st-century social-media boom. ## Timeline | When | What happened | |---|---| | ~14.8 million years ago | An asteroid strikes what is now Bavaria, Germany, forming the ~24 km **Nördlinger Ries** crater. Melted surface sediments are hurled 200–450 km east and solidify in flight as green glass. | | Paleolithic (~25,000+ years ago) | Moldavite fragments appear at Old Stone Age sites in Lower Austria and Moravia, worked or carried as objects. It is often said a Moldavite piece was found near the Venus of Willendorf; that specific claim is widely repeated but poorly documented. | | 1786–1787 | Josef Mayer, a professor in Prague, presents the first scientific description of the stones, found near Týn nad Vltavou, calling them a kind of "chrysolite". | | 1836 | The name **Moldavit** comes into use, after the Vltava river (German: *Moldau*). In Czech it is **vltavín**. | | 19th century | Faceted Moldavite becomes fashionable in Bohemian and Austro-Hungarian jewelry, sometimes sold as "bottle stone" or "water chrysolite". | | 1900 | Austrian geologist Franz Eduard Suess coins the word **tektite** (Greek *tēktos*, "molten") and argues for a cosmic origin. | | 1950s–1990s | Competing origin theories: volcanic glass, lunar volcanism, and terrestrial impact. | | 1960s onward | Chemistry, isotopes and matching ages tie Moldavite firmly to the Ries impact. This is now the scientific consensus. | | 20th century | Moldavite becomes a protected Czech national gemstone and is classed as a reserved mineral under Czech mining law. | | 2008 | Mining at the famous Besednice locality ends, according to dealer accounts, making Besednice pieces increasingly scarce. | | 2020–2022 | A social-media surge (especially TikTok) sends demand and prices soaring and floods the market with fakes. | | 2023–2026 | Prices settle on a high plateau; top grades keep climbing as legal supply shrinks. | ## Moldavite in Czech culture In South Bohemia Moldavite has long been a local treasure, collected from fields and sandpits after ploughing and rain. It became a traditional engagement and keepsake stone, and Czech museums such as the Moldavite Museum in Český Krumlov preserve major collections. Today it is regarded as a symbol of the region. ## From folk stone to global phenomenon For most of the 20th century Moldavite was an affordable regional curiosity. New Age writers from the 1980s onward promoted it as a stone of transformation, and social media in 2020–2021 turned it into a global must-have. That demand, together with dwindling legal supply, explains today's prices. See [Price](https://moldavitegems.com/price.html). --- # The Hard Science of Moldavite > The science of Moldavite: Ries crater impact origin, glass chemistry, density, hardness, refractive index, lechatelierite and why it is a tektite. - Source: https://moldavitegems.com/science.html - Publisher: Moldavite Gems (https://moldavitegems.com/) - Last updated: 2026-10-20 - Cite as: Moldavite Gems. "The Hard Science of Moldavite." https://moldavitegems.com/science.html. Updated October 2026. Moldavite is a **tektite**: natural glass formed when an asteroid impact melted Earth's surface rocks. It is terrestrial material, not a piece of the asteroid. ## How it formed 1. About **14.8 million years ago** (Miocene epoch) an asteroid, likely several hundred metres across, hit southern Germany and formed the **Ries crater**. 2. Surface sands and sediments were instantly melted at temperatures well above 1,600 °C. 3. The melt was ejected at high speed toward the east-northeast, travelling 200–450 km in a few minutes. 4. Droplets and splashes cooled in flight into glass and fell across today's Czech Republic, Austria and eastern Germany: the **Moldavite strewn field**. 5. Over millions of years, buried in sediments, chemical corrosion etched the surfaces into the sculpted, "hedgehog" textures collectors prize. The nearby, smaller Steinheim crater (~3.8 km) has been proposed as a twin impact from the same event. Whether the two are exactly the same age is still debated. ## Physical properties | Property | Typical value | Why it matters | |---|---|---| | Material | Amorphous silica-rich glass | No crystal structure, so it is not a "crystal" in the mineral sense | | Color | Bottle green, olive, forest green, brownish green | Caused mainly by iron; vivid emerald or lime green is suspicious | | Hardness | About 5.5–7 Mohs | Scratches more easily than quartz; facets wear with daily use | | Specific gravity | About 2.32–2.38 | A density test is one of the best home checks; many fake glasses are heavier | | Refractive index | About 1.48–1.51 | Lower than most man-made glass | | Water content | Extremely low (hundredths of a percent) | Formed in extreme heat; much drier than volcanic glass | | Optical | Isotropic, often with strain | Swirls (schlieren) visible in transmitted light | ## Chemistry | Component | Approx. weight % | |---|---| | SiO₂ (silica) | 75–81 | | Al₂O₃ (alumina) | 9–12 | | K₂O (potassium oxide) | 2–3.5 | | CaO | 1.5–3 | | FeO (total iron) | 1–2 | | MgO | 1–2 | | Na₂O | under 0.5 | Values are typical ranges from the literature and vary by locality. Low sodium and high potassium help distinguish Moldavite from bottle glass. ## Inclusions: the fingerprints of an impact - **Lechatelierite**: worm-like threads of nearly pure silica glass, formed only at extreme temperatures (lightning or impacts). Their presence is strong evidence of genuine Moldavite. - **Bubbles**: mostly irregular, elongated or distorted, sometimes partially collapsed. Perfectly round bubble trains suggest man-made glass. - **Flow structures**: swirled schlieren where melts of slightly different composition mixed. ## Tektite, not meteorite Meteorites are fragments of asteroids that survive the fall. Tektites are melted Earth rock. Moldavite's chemistry matches the sediments around the Ries crater, which is why scientists link the two. Other tektite fields include the Australasian (indochinites, australites), Ivory Coast and North American fields; Moldavite is the only green, gem-quality one. ## Key evidence for the Ries link - Radiometric ages of Moldavite and Ries impact glass match (~14.8 million years). - Chemical and isotopic signatures match the Ries-area surface sediments. - The strewn field fans out east-northeast of the crater, consistent with a single ejection direction. --- # Moldavite Localities > Where Moldavite is found: Besednice, Chlum, Slavče, Nesměň, Moravia and other Czech localities, with each site's character and price per gram. - Source: https://moldavitegems.com/localities.html - Publisher: Moldavite Gems (https://moldavitegems.com/) - Last updated: 2026-10-20 - Cite as: Moldavite Gems. "Moldavite Localities." https://moldavitegems.com/localities.html. Updated October 2026. Almost all Moldavite comes from the Czech Republic, mainly South Bohemia. Locality strongly influences shape, texture, color and price. ## The strewn field | Region | Country | Notes | |---|---|---| | South Bohemia (České Budějovice & Český Krumlov basins) | Czech Republic | The heart of the field and source of most specimens | | Western Moravia (Třebíč / Znojmo area) | Czech Republic | Often darker, brownish-green, heavier pieces | | Cheb Basin | Czech Republic | Rare finds | | Lusatia | Germany | Small, rare pieces | | Horn / Waldviertel | Austria | Rare; historically important finds | ## Notable localities | Locality | Character | Typical retail $/g* | |---|---|---| | **Besednice** (incl. Ježkovna) | The apex locality: delicate, deeply etched, spiky "hedgehog" and "angel chime" pieces. Mining ended around 2008. | $85–195; exceptional pieces far higher | | **Chlum** (Malý & Velký Chlum, Chlum nad Malší) | Classic South Bohemian material; discs, drops and well-textured pieces. Major legal sandpit operation. | $25–70 | | **Slavče** / Zatáčka / Dobrkovská Lhotka | Good color and sculpting; sources of fine "sculpture" pieces (Paříž, Bažina). | $25–40 ordinary; $75–190 sculptures | | **Nesměň** | Rods, elongated and well-shaped pieces. | $30–35 | | **Vrábče** | Disc shapes and nicely etched stones. | $30–35 | | **Jankov** | Smaller stones, often bright green. | $30–45 | | **Brusná** | Larger, chunkier commercial stones. | $15–40 | | **Lhenice**, Ločenice, Radomilice | Other South Bohemian finds of varying quality. | $25–40 | | **Moravia** (Slavětice, Skryje, Olešnice) | Darker brownish-green, often larger. | $15–60 | * Asking prices from specialist dealers, October 2026. See [Price](https://moldavitegems.com/price.html) for methodology. ## Why locality matters - **Scarcity:** closed or exhausted localities (Besednice) command large premiums. - **Texture:** soil chemistry differs between deposits, producing different etching styles. - **Provenance:** a stated locality is a sign of a knowledgeable, honest seller. "Czech Republic" alone is weaker evidence. **Legal note:** Moldavite is a reserved mineral in the Czech Republic. Digging without permission is illegal and enforced; collecting rules vary by site. Buy from sellers who source legally. --- # How to Spot Real vs Fake Moldavite > How to tell real Moldavite from fake glass: bubbles, inclusions, color, etching, the density test, price red flags and questions to ask sellers. - Source: https://moldavitegems.com/real-vs-fake.html - Publisher: Moldavite Gems (https://moldavitegems.com/) - Last updated: 2026-10-20 - Cite as: Moldavite Gems. "How to Spot Real vs Fake Moldavite." https://moldavitegems.com/real-vs-fake.html. Updated October 2026. Fakes are everywhere. Most are green glass, often molded to imitate natural etching. No single test is perfect, so combine several. ## Quick comparison | Feature | Genuine Moldavite | Typical fake | |---|---|---| | Color | Muted bottle, olive or forest green; may vary within a piece | Uniform vivid emerald, lime or "apple green" | | Bubbles | Irregular, elongated or distorted | Perfectly round, often in neat rows | | Inclusions | Lechatelierite "worms", swirls | Clean or uniform; seed bubbles only | | Surface | Natural, varied etching; every piece unique | Repetitive patterns, molded look, seam lines | | Luster | Slightly matte on etched surfaces | Wet-looking, glossy all over | | Specific gravity | About 2.32–2.38 | Often 2.45–2.6 for common glass | | Price | Rarely under $14/g genuine | Under $10/g, often cents per gram | | Description | Weight in grams and Czech locality stated | "Meteorite", no weight, "AAA+++", bulk carat lots | ## Tests you can do at home ### 1. Backlight inspection Hold the stone to a strong light or phone torch. Look for swirls, irregular bubbles and thread-like lechatelierite with a 10× loupe. ### 2. Hydrostatic density test Weigh the stone dry (A), then suspended in water (B). Specific gravity = A ÷ (A − B). Genuine Moldavite is about 2.32–2.38. You need a scale accurate to 0.01 g. ### 3. Texture check Natural etching is irregular and varies across the stone. Repeated identical "hedgehog" spikes across many listings suggest molds. ### 4. Price and seller check Compare $/g to our [price bands](https://moldavitegems.com/price.html). Ask where the stone was found; honest sellers answer quickly and specifically. ## Red flags - Price below about **$10/g**; anything near $1/g is almost certainly glass. - $0.99-start auctions, multi-piece "chip lots", weights given only in carats. - Shipping from China or Hong Kong, or listings in bulk kilograms. - The word "meteorite" (Moldavite is a tektite). - Printed "certificates" with no traceable lab; a certificate is not proof. - Sellers who avoid provenance questions. ## What about lab testing? Gemological labs can confirm Moldavite with refractive index, specific gravity, magnification and chemical analysis. For expensive collector or Besednice pieces, independent testing is worth the cost. **Rule of thumb:** if it is cheap, bright and perfect, it is probably glass. --- # Moldavite Price Guide (2026) > Moldavite price per gram in 2026: wholesale and retail ranges by grade and size, median dealer prices, realized sale prices and the market trend. - Source: https://moldavitegems.com/price.html - Publisher: Moldavite Gems (https://moldavitegems.com/) - Last updated: 2026-10-20 - Cite as: Moldavite Gems. "Moldavite Price Guide (2026)." https://moldavitegems.com/price.html. Updated October 2026. Prices for genuine, natural, uncut Czech Moldavite in US dollars per gram, based on research in **October 2026**. ## By grade ## By size (ordinary grades) Retail by size computed from 64 live dealer listings; premium localities and sculptures excluded. Several wholesale figures are estimates because trade prices are negotiated privately. ## Summary table | Grade | Wholesale | Retail asking | Retail median | Fair target | |---|---|---|---|---| | Chips / plain rough | $10–16 | $15–25 | $20 | $12–20 | | Commercial (large raw) | $12–20 | $12–43 | $24 | $18–28 | | Regular / mid grade | $20–35 | $26–60 | $45 | $30–42 | | High grade (etched, disk) | $30–50 | $40–75 | $60 | $50–70 | | Museum / collector | $38–75 | $55–140 | $76 | $60–110 | | Besednice / angel chime | $45–85 | $68–174 | $88 | $100–180 | ## What stones actually sell for - Verified sales: median **$38/g**, ranging from about $14/g (large commercial) to $120/g (Besednice). - Ordinary grades typically sell **30–50% below** dealer asking prices; top grades 15–40% below. - Buying directly from Czech finders is often 40–60% cheaper than US retail for comparable stones. ## How size affects price For ordinary stones, price per gram **falls** as size rises: large commercial stones are the cheapest per gram. For premium shapes, sculptures and Besednice pieces, the opposite is true: large, intact, well-etched pieces cost more per gram. ## Market trend | Period | Wholesale $/g | What happened | |---|---|---| | Before 2020 | $1–5 | Niche collector market | | 2021 | Rapid rise | Social-media boom | | 2022 | $20–35 (peak) | Wholesale peak | | 2023–2026 | Flat to rising | High plateau; top grades still climbing | **Fake threshold:** genuine Moldavite rarely sells below about $14/g. Treat anything under $10/g as suspect and under $2/g as glass. Figures are indicative market ranges, not appraisals. Sources: dealer listings, marketplace scans and verified sales collected October 2026. --- # Moldavite Grading & Quality > How Moldavite is graded: etching, shape, color, clarity, size and locality, and what separates a $20 per gram stone from a $200 per gram specimen. - Source: https://moldavitegems.com/grading.html - Publisher: Moldavite Gems (https://moldavitegems.com/) - Last updated: 2026-10-20 - Cite as: Moldavite Gems. "Moldavite Grading & Quality." https://moldavitegems.com/grading.html. Updated October 2026. There is no official grading standard. Dealer labels like "AAA" or "museum grade" mean different things to different sellers, so learn the underlying features. ## Common trade grades | Grade | What it usually means | |---|---| | Chips / commercial | Broken or plain pieces, little etching; used for jewelry and wire wrapping | | Regular | Whole stones with moderate texture and decent color | | High / AA–AAA | Strong etching, attractive shape, good translucency | | Museum | Exceptional, intact pieces with deep etching and classic shapes | | Collector / sculpture | Rare forms, unusual shapes or famous localities; priced individually | ## What drives value ### Etching & texture Deep, sharp, natural sculpting ("hedgehog", ruffled, feathery) is the single biggest quality factor. ### Shape Drops, discs, splash forms and "angel chime" shapes carry premiums. Broken edges reduce value. ### Color & translucency Rich bottle-to-forest green with good light transmission is preferred. ### Locality Besednice is the top premium; see [Localities](https://moldavitegems.com/localities.html). ### Size Large intact quality pieces are rare and valuable; large plain pieces are cheap per gram. ### Condition Fresh fractures, chips and polishing on a raw piece lower value. ## Raw vs cut Faceted and cabochon Moldavite show color and clarity, but the cutting removes the natural surface. Collectors usually prize raw specimens; jewelry buyers often prefer cut stones. Cut pieces are also easier to fake convincingly. --- # Moldavite Buying Guide > How to buy genuine Moldavite safely: a buyer's checklist, questions to ask sellers, where to buy, fair prices and red flags that signal fakes. - Source: https://moldavitegems.com/buying-guide.html - Publisher: Moldavite Gems (https://moldavitegems.com/) - Last updated: 2026-10-20 - Cite as: Moldavite Gems. Decide your goal: collecting, jewelry, or metaphysical use. It changes which grade makes sense. 2. Know the [price per gram](https://moldavitegems.com/price.html) for that grade and size. 3. Learn the [real vs fake](https://moldavitegems.com/real-vs-fake.html) signs. ## The listing must show - Weight in **grams** (to two decimals for small stones). - Czech **locality**, ideally a specific site. - Clear photos of the actual stone, including backlit shots. - A return policy. ## Questions to ask the seller - Where exactly was this stone found, and how did you source it? - Will you accept a return if independent testing shows it is not Moldavite? - Can you send a backlit photo or video? ## Where to buy | Channel | Pros | Cons | |---|---|---| | Czech finder-direct shops | Best provenance and value | International shipping, customs | | Specialist dealers (US/EU) | Curated stock, convenient returns | Higher prices | | eBay specialists | Wide selection, buyer protection | Many fakes; vet sellers carefully | | Etsy shops | Easy, many small stones | Quality varies; low-price lots risky | | Gem and mineral shows | Inspect in person, negotiate | Limited dates and locations | Good feedback scores do **not** prove authenticity; most buyers cannot tell glass from Moldavite. Judge the listing details instead. ## After you buy - Inspect immediately under backlight and do a density test. - Keep the listing screenshots and invoice. - For valuable pieces, get an independent gem-lab report within the return window. --- # Moldavite Energetic Properties > What crystal practitioners believe about Moldavite: transformation, the heart chakra and the "Moldavite flush", presented as beliefs, not science. - Source: https://moldavitegems.com/energetic-properties.html - Publisher: Moldavite Gems (https://moldavitegems.com/) - Last updated: 2026-10-20 - Cite as: Moldavite Gems. These claims have not been demonstrated scientifically. Moldavite is not a substitute for medical or psychological care. Among crystal enthusiasts, Moldavite is considered one of the most intense stones, associated with rapid change and spiritual awakening. ## Commonly held beliefs | Belief | What practitioners say | |---|---| | Stone of transformation | Thought to accelerate personal change and spiritual growth, sometimes abruptly | | Heart chakra | Associated with the heart chakra because of its green color; also with the third eye and crown | | "Moldavite flush" | A reported feeling of warmth, tingling or flushing when first holding it | | Cosmic connection | Valued as a "stone from the heavens" linking the earthly and the celestial | | Intention and manifestation | Used in meditation to focus intentions | | Protection | Some believe it should be paired with grounding stones | ## Common practices - **Meditation:** holding a small piece or placing it on the chest or forehead. - **Pairing:** often combined with grounding stones such as black tourmaline, smoky quartz or hematite to "balance" its intensity. - **Starting small:** beginners are often advised to start with short sessions. - **Cleansing:** moonlight, sound or smoke are popular; avoid salt water and harsh chemicals, which can damage the surface. ## Origins of these beliefs Moldavite's modern metaphysical reputation grew mainly from New Age literature in the 1980s and 1990s, building on older folk traditions of Moldavite as a lucky and love stone in Bohemia. Its spread on social media from 2020 popularized the "flush" and "transformation" ideas. ## A scientific perspective Moldavite is chemically ordinary natural glass with no unusual radiation, magnetism or energy emission. Sensations people report are best explained by expectation and emotion, which can still be meaningful to the person. Whatever your view, buying genuine stones matters: fakes are especially common in the spiritual market. --- # Alternative Moldavite Theories > Alternative and fringe theories about Moldavite, from Holy Grail and Lucifer's crown legends to non-impact origin ideas, weighed against evidence. - Source: https://moldavitegems.com/alternative-theory.html - Publisher: Moldavite Gems (https://moldavitegems.com/) - Last updated: 2026-10-20 - Cite as: Moldavite Gems. Before the Ries impact link was established, and outside mainstream science since, many ideas have been proposed about where Moldavite comes from and what it means. This page collects them, with an honest evidence check for each. Mainstream science view: Moldavite is melted Earth sediment ejected by the Ries asteroid impact ~14.8 million years ago. See [Hard Science](https://moldavitegems.com/science.html). ## Theories ### Lunar volcanism former scientific hypothesis From the 1950s to the 1990s some respected scientists, notably John O'Keefe, argued tektites were ejected from volcanoes on the Moon. **Evidence check:** Apollo samples and isotope chemistry do not match; Moldavite matches Ries-area sediments. Largely abandoned. ### Terrestrial volcanic glass historical Early naturalists thought Moldavite was volcanic obsidian or a slag. **Evidence check:** Too dry, with lechatelierite and no nearby volcanic source. Rejected. ### Man-made glass historical Some 19th-century observers suspected ancient glassworks. **Evidence check:** Found in undisturbed sediments millions of years old, and used in the Stone Age. Rejected. ### Separate comet or airburst fringe Proposals that Moldavite came from a distinct cosmic event rather than the Ries crater. **Evidence check:** Ages and chemistry match the Ries impact closely. Unsupported. ### The Holy Grail legend A popular modern legend says the Grail was carved from, or set with, an emerald that fell from Lucifer's crown, identified by some as Moldavite. **Evidence check:** A modern New Age reading of medieval Grail stories (where the Grail is sometimes a stone). No historical link to Moldavite. ### Extraterrestrial & "starseed" ideas spiritual belief Beliefs that Moldavite carries off-world energy or connects people to star beings or Atlantis. **Evidence check:** Not testable scientifically; Moldavite is made of Earth material. See [Energetic Properties](https://moldavitegems.com/energetic-properties.html). ## Open questions scientists still discuss - Whether the Steinheim crater formed at exactly the same moment as the Ries. - The exact size and angle of the impactor, and why melt went so far in one direction. - How much Moldavite originally fell, and how much remains buried. ## Our alternative theory This section is reserved for the site owner's own theory. Add it here, clearly labeled as a hypothesis, alongside the evidence that supports it and what would test it. --- # Moldavite FAQ & Care > Moldavite FAQ: is it a meteorite, is it radioactive, is it legal to buy and export, how to clean, store and wear it, and why it is so expensive. - Source: https://moldavitegems.com/faq.html - Publisher: Moldavite Gems (https://moldavitegems.com/) - Last updated: 2026-10-20 - Cite as: Moldavite Gems. "Moldavite FAQ & Care." https://moldavitegems.com/faq.html. Updated October 2026. ## Is Moldavite a meteorite? No. It is a **tektite**: Earth rock melted by an asteroid impact. The asteroid itself mostly vaporized. ## Is it radioactive or dangerous? No. Moldavite is ordinary natural glass and safe to handle. Treat sharp etched edges with care. ## Is it legal to buy and export? Yes, buying and exporting legally sourced Moldavite is normal. In the Czech Republic it is a reserved mineral, so unlicensed digging is illegal. ## How do I clean it? Use lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, acids, salt water and sudden temperature changes. ## How should I store it? Separately in a soft pouch or padded box. Harder stones like quartz can scratch it, and delicate etched spikes break easily. ## Can I wear it every day? Yes, but with a hardness of about 5.5–7 it scratches and chips more easily than quartz. Protective settings (bezels) help for rings. ## Why is it so expensive? A single source region, protected and declining supply, closed premium localities and strong global demand. See [Price](https://moldavitegems.com/price.html). ## What is "angel chime" or "hedgehog" Moldavite? Trade terms for very spiky, deeply etched pieces, most famously from Besednice. Thin angel-chime pieces can make a faint ringing sound when tapped together. ## Does Moldavite form today? "The Moldavite Market in 2026: A High Plateau, Shrinking Supply and a Flood of Fakes." https://moldavitegems.com/blog/moldavite-market-2026.html. Updated October 2026. Five years after TikTok sent prices soaring, the Moldavite market has not crashed. Genuine Czech Moldavite sits on a **high price plateau**, the best material keeps getting more expensive, and buyers face more fakes than ever. Here is where the market stands in October 2026, and what it means if you are buying. ## Key takeaways - Ordinary grades of genuine raw Moldavite ask roughly **$20–60 per gram** at reputable dealers. Realized sales run about 30–50% below specialist asking prices.[[18]](#src-18) - One specialist store’s record of 898 real sales shows a **median of $73 per gram from 2022 to 2026**, and no genuine raw stone sold below $45 per gram since 2022.[[1]](#src-1) - Collector pieces and prestigious localities such as Besednice reach $50–200+ per gram, with rare outliers near $1,000 per gram.[[2]](#src-2) - Demand has cooled since the 2021 peak, but prices held because legal supply keeps shrinking.[[1]](#src-1)[[3]](#src-3) - Anything offered far below about $10 per gram, especially in bulk from China, is almost certainly glass.[[14]](#src-14)[[18]](#src-18) ## How we got here: prices from the 1990s to 2026 | Period | Typical price (USD per gram) | Source | |---|---|---| | Late 1990s | $2.50–5 retail | [[5]](#src-5) | | About 2015–2019 | About $1–10; wholesale about $1–5 | [[4]](#src-4) | | 2020 | $10–20 retail; one specialist store’s median $20 | [[6]](#src-6)[[1]](#src-1) | | First half of 2021 (TikTok boom) | Prices roughly doubled; that store’s median jumped to $48 | [[6]](#src-6)[[1]](#src-1) | | 2022 | Wholesale peak of $20–35 | [[7]](#src-7) | | 2022–2024 | High plateau, no crash; commercial retail about $35–55 | [[1]](#src-1)[[17]](#src-17) | | 2026 | Regular grades about $25–40; collector $50–200+; small wholesale lots about $15–16 | [[2]](#src-2)[[8]](#src-8) | The long-run jump is striking. A gem show writer noted in 2025 that Moldavite prices were “off the chart, no deals,” compared with about 50 cents per gram ten years earlier.[[9]](#src-9) ## Prices today by grade All figures are US dollars per gram for natural, uncut Czech Moldavite. | Grade | Retail asking | Retail median | Wholesale (estimate) | |---|---|---|---| | Chips / plain rough lots | $15–25 | $20 | $10–16 | | Commercial (large raw) | $12–43 | $24 | $12–20 | | Regular / mid grade | $26–60 | $45 | $20–35 | | High grade (etched, disk) | $40–75 | $60 | $30–50 | | Museum / collector | $55–140 | $76 | $38–75 | | Besednice / angel chime | $68–174 | $88 | $45–85 | Source: Moldavite Gems survey of 64 dealer listings, 18 eBay specialist listings and 9 realized sales, October 2026.[[18]](#src-18) Several wholesale tiers are estimates. Size matters in an unusual way. For ordinary grades, the price per gram **falls** as stones get bigger: our survey found a median of about $46 per gram for stones under 3 grams, versus about $24–26 per gram above 10 grams.[[18]](#src-18) Premium grades and named localities break that rule. Among credible eBay specialist listings in October 2026, most asked $25–45 per gram, while museum-grade “hedgehogs” and Besednice pieces asked $70–80 per gram.[[19]](#src-19) ## Demand cooled, but the price floor held The 2021 frenzy is over. On one specialist store that publishes its sales, volume fell from about 630 stones in 2021 to 68 in a later period, yet prices stayed far above pre-boom levels.[[1]](#src-1) Chlum material rose from a median of $61 per gram in 2021 to about $76 per gram over 2022–2026.[[1]](#src-1) In its August 2026 market report, meteorite dealer Galactic Stone said Moldavite prices continue to climb.[[3]](#src-3) The pattern is a market with fewer, more selective buyers, but not a falling one. ## Why supply keeps shrinking - **One source.** Moldavite comes only from the strewn field of the Ries impact, mainly South Bohemia in the Czech Republic. Genuine Moldavite from China, India or Thailand does not exist. See [Hard Science](https://moldavitegems.com/science.html). - **Protected.** It is a reserved mineral under Czech law, so unlicensed digging is illegal. See [Localities](https://moldavitegems.com/localities.html). - **Closed classics.** Mining at the famous Besednice locality ended in 2008 according to dealer accounts, so those pieces get scarcer every year. See [History](https://moldavitegems.com/history.html). - **Valuable deposits.** Czech Radio reported in 2022 on an auction of mine contents valued at about 200 million crowns.[[10]](#src-10) ## Buying direct from the Czech Republic Czech finder-direct shops often price 40–60% below US retail on comparable grades.[[18]](#src-18) Examples from October 2026: Muzeum vltavínů in Český Krumlov listed a 21.74 g Besednice piece at 500 Kč per gram, about $22;[[11]](#src-11) Magie přírody listed top-quality raw pieces of about 10 g at roughly 500–980 Kč per gram, about $22–43;[[12]](#src-12) and Moldavite Family priced regular 1–2 g raw stones at about 900 Kč, around $39.[[13]](#src-13) Shipping, import costs and harder returns narrow the gap. Conversions use about 22.5 Kč per US dollar. ## Wholesale and trade Trade buyers pay less, but not dramatically less. InnerVision Crystals reported wholesale kilo prices peaking at $20–35 per gram in 2022,[[7]](#src-7) and small wholesale lots in 2026 sit around $15–16 per gram.[[8]](#src-8) Talk around the Tucson 2026 shows put wholesale anywhere from $10 to $50 per gram.[[21]](#src-21) Show prices are rarely published; wholesale is negotiated in person. ## The fake problem is bigger than ever High prices make Moldavite worth faking, and the fakes have followed the money. - Chinese suppliers on Alibaba offer “Moldavite rough” at $0.80–0.99 per gram in kilo lots.[[14]](#src-14) Genuine Moldavite only occurs in Central Europe, so these are glass. - On eBay, series of “certificate” lots starting at $0.99 sit around $1.50 per gram even after bidding, classic fake territory.[[19]](#src-19) - Collectors repeatedly name Chinese-dispatch eBay stores as a common source of fakes,[[16]](#src-16) and printed certificates of authenticity are widely regarded as meaningless.[[15]](#src-15) - In 2014 one dealer estimated about 70% of Moldavite on the US market was fake.[[20]](#src-20) No comparable recent figure exists, but community warnings have not let up. **Rule of thumb:** genuine raw Moldavite under about $10 per gram is suspect, and under $2 per gram is almost certainly glass. See [Real vs Fake](https://moldavitegems.com/real-vs-fake.html) for the checks. ## Outlook Expect **no crash and no new boom**. Ordinary grades look flat to modestly rising. Top grades and named localities are likely to keep climbing as legal supply shrinks. Fakes will keep flooding cheap marketplaces. This is market commentary, not investment advice. ## What this means for buyers - Budget roughly $30–60 per gram for a nice, genuine small stone from a reputable seller. - Larger ordinary stones are better value per gram. - Buy from specialists who name the Czech locality and offer a clear return policy. - Walk away from bargains that look too good to be true.
