# Moldavite Gems

> Moldavite Gems (https://moldavitegems.com) is an independent, research-based guide to Czech Moldavite, the green tektite glass formed by the Ries impact about 14.8 million years ago. It covers 2026 prices per gram, grading, localities, science, history and how to tell real Moldavite from fakes. Last updated 2026-10-20.

Key facts:
- Moldavite is a tektite (natural impact glass), not a meteorite. It formed about 14.8 million years ago when an asteroid struck the Ries area of Bavaria, Germany.
- Almost all Moldavite is found in the Czech Republic, mainly South Bohemia, with smaller finds in Moravia, Germany (Lusatia) and Austria.
- Typical 2026 retail asking price for ordinary grades is about $20-60 per gram; Besednice and collector pieces cost much more.
- Genuine Moldavite has a specific gravity of about 2.32-2.38, a refractive index of about 1.48-1.51 and a hardness of about 5.5-7 Mohs.
- Fakes are common: uniform vivid green color, perfectly round bubbles and prices under about $10 per gram are red flags.
